Shemos 8:17, 28

כִּ֣י אִם־אֵינְךָ֮ מְשַׁלֵּ֣חַ אֶת־עַמִּי֒ הִנְנִי֩ מַשְׁלִ֨יחַ בְּךָ֜ וּבַעֲבָדֶ֧יךָ וּֽבְעַמְּךָ֛ וּבְבָתֶּ֖יךָ אֶת־הֶעָרֹ֑ב וּמָ֨לְא֜וּ בָּתֵּ֤י מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ אֶת־הֶ֣עָרֹ֔ב וְגַ֥ם הָאֲדָמָ֖ה אֲשֶׁר־הֵ֥ם עָלֶֽיהָ

וַיַּכְבֵּ֤ד פַּרְעֹה֙ אֶת־לִבּ֔וֹ גַּ֖ם בַּפַּ֣עַם הַזֹּ֑את וְלֹ֥א שִׁלַּ֖ח אֶת־הָעָֽם

Behold, I am sending against you… the swarm of wild animals, etc., and also the ground upon which they are, etc. And Pharaoh hardened his heart also this time

Our teacher, the Rabbeinu Bachaye, examined, for we do not find in any other plague that the definite article “the” (Hay Hayedi’ah) is mentioned, as it says here “the arov (Wild Animals).” Furthermore, he notes what comes to inform us by also saying “also this time.” However, what appears to my humble opinion, it is possible to say according to the words of the commentators (brought in the book Pardes Yosef, Parshas Va’eira 19, in the name of the Vilna Gaon) regarding the verse “and also the ground upon which they are”:

The intention is regarding the “Creature of the Field” (Adney HaSadeh), which is in the form of a human and is attached to the ground by a cord that comes out from its navel from which it draws its nourishment, and if they sever the cord, it immediately dies.

And since Hashem decreed that every species of animal in the world should come to Egypt, of necessity this creature also had to come. Therefore, Hashem made it so that the entire clod of earth from which this creature draws its nourishment also came. And this is the meaning of “and also the ground upon which they are”—[the] animals; it came with them to fulfill His decree, may He be blessed.

And therefore it is written with the definite article “the” to indicate that there was a wonder in the arov that was amazing to the eye of the beholder: that the predatory animal was walking and its form was fearsome, and with it traveled the mound of earth from which it draws its nourishment.

And since in this wonderful plague they saw all the might of His dominion, may He be blessed, over all of creation, and even so Pharaoh was not moved, it is therefore written appropriately, “also this time.”
