Shemos 30:12

“When you take a census…”

In the Ba’al HaTurim: Pekudim (countings) appears three times; Machatzis HaShekel (half-shekel) appears three times; Kofer Nafsho (atonement for his soul) appears three times; Lichaper (to atone) appears three times; and Bnei Yisrael (Children of Israel) appears three times.

It should be said that these five correspond to the five things that occurred during the act of the [Golden] Calf:

  1. They ate 2. And they drank 3. And they rose up to make merry 4. And they prostrated themselves 5. And they sacrificed.

And corresponding to this, they also brought five types of gold for the donation of the Tabernacle, as it is written later (35:22): Brooch (Chach), earring (Nezem), ring (Taba’as), body-ornament (Kumaz), and gold vessels (Klei Zahav). See further (32:17) in the Ba’al HaTurim
