ויאמר ה’ אל משה נטה ידך על ארץ מצרים בארבה (י, יב). יש לדקדק על תיבת בארבה. ונראה לעניות דעתי על פי דברי המפרשים (פני דוד וחלקות חות ו; ילקוט הראובני שמות, אות מ) שיצחק היה שמו ישחק, ונתרצה לכפר על בני ישראל, הוציא ונתן משמו הש’ ונטל תחתיו צ’, על כן נגמר הגלות דמצרים בר”י שנה. והנה בארבה גימטריה ר”י, ולפי זה כוונת תיבת בארבה, שפרעה שאל למשה הלא נגזר על בני ישראל ארבע מאות שנה, ועדיין לא עבדו אלא ר”י שנה. על זה התרה אותו במכת ארבה, שרומז ליצחק שנתן הש’ משמו כנ”ל, ועל כן מספיק ר”י שנה כנ”ל
“And the Lord said to Moses: Stretch out your hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts (Ba’arbeh)…“
One should examine the word Ba’arbeh (בארבה). It appears to me, in my humble opinion, based on the words of the commentators (Pnei David Vaeira 6, Yalkut Reuveini Shemos 40 ), that Yitzchak’s name was originally intended to be Yishchak (ישחק). However, to atone for the Children of Israel, God took the letter Shin (ש) from his name and replaced it with a Tzadi (צ).
Because of this change, the exile in Egypt ended after only 210 years. Note that the word Ba’arbeh (בארבה) has the Gematria of 210.
According to this, the meaning of the word Ba’arbeh is this: Pharaoh asked Moses, “Was it not decreed that the Children of Israel would be [in exile] for four hundred years? And yet they have only served 210 years!”
To this, God answered him with the plague of Arbeh (Locusts), hinting that because Isaac’s name was changed—removing the Shin (numerical value 300) and replacing it with Tzadi (numerical value 90)—the difference is 210. Therefore, 210 years of exile were sufficient.
